Dexter R. Mullins is originally from Sacramento, Calif, but resides in Manhattan, N.Y. Mullins recently graduated from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism & Mass Communications Magna Cum Laude. He currently attends the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and will complete his Master of Science degree in Digital Media by May of 2011.
Mullins has had a passion for journalism since the age of 14, when his step mother signed him up for a beginning journalism class at Center High School in the suburbs of Antelope, Calif. One the first day of class, instructor Pete LeBlanc told him that journalists are the people who have the power to change the world. From that moment, the seed was planted and Mullins was hooked. When he wasn’t learning about journalism, he was actively practicing it by writing for his high school paper The Blue & Gold and yearbook The Epic.
The drive carried him right to college, where he served as first an intern, then a reporter, assistant managing editor, online editor, and finally editor of his collegiate newspaper The A&T Register.Mullins also simultaneously served as editor of the campus yearbook The Ayantee for three years before giving up the position to focus full-time on being editor of the paper.
He has interned for publications such as The News & Record, Four Seasons Magazine, and USA TODAY. He also participated in a two-week fellowship at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Fla and participated in the NABJ Student Multimedia Project this year in San Diego, Calif.
Mullins aspires to become a multi-platform journalist, able to work in the areas of print, broadcast, online, and design. When Mullins is not working towards his goals, he spends time visiting his family, whom reside all over the United States.
